British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
