Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 people perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
