The Liverpool skipper has delivered a blunt assessment of Liverpool's woeful championship campaign, confessing the title holders are in a mess and failing head coach Slot while doubting whether all squad members is taking responsibility for the team’s slump.

The Dutch defender struggled to hold back his frustration after the weekend's 3-0 home defeat by Nottingham Forest, a result that left Liverpool in the bottom half of the Premier League table with a negative goal difference. Poor Second Half and Defensive Lapses

The captain labeled Liverpool’s start to the second half as “unacceptable” and admitted “anxiety set in” as soon as the Forest player gave the visitors the lead. Forest’s opener was the ninth goal Liverpool have allowed from dead-ball situations in the Premier League this season.

“We had a productive build-up to the match but in a fixture you are facing facts and the facts are we gave away a free-kick in the first half and a terrible goal at the beginning after the break,” said the defender. “We are certainly letting him down, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. Van Dijk’s Demands: Take Responsibility

Van Dijk usually speaks the press after a match as part of his role as Liverpool captain. Saturday was different, however. The Dutchman added: “This season we lack any steady form, we allow far too many goals, we are losing battles and everyone is responsible for it and I hope everyone sees that. We have to take responsibility to reverse the situation and tempting to assign blame but unity is essential. We have been through it together and claimed the title and everyone was part of it, and during a tough time you must remain united and avoid blaming others.

“Show character and confront the hardship and persist, again and again because if you want to give up then you are in the wrong environment in my eyes, because Liverpool has been enduring many adversity over recent seasons and we’ve consistently emerged of it. But it doesn’t mean it is easy, it’s exhausting but there is only one path forward.”

Looking Ahead

The upcoming match in the domestic league is a trip to West Ham next Sunday, after the midweek visit of the Dutch side in the European competition. He commented: “The next game is another opportunity so what am I going to do, dwell on the loss? Certainly not, I’m going to return and analyze how we can turn this around and I trust that is the collective focus as well.”
