Preparations for Trump-Putin Talks Shelved Shortly After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Proposed

There are "no plans" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has stated.

Last Thursday the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital soon to examine the war in Ukraine.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the White House clarified the two had had a "constructive" call and that a meeting was no longer "necessary".

The White House did not share further information on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

Trump had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar claiming Trump had pushed him to cede significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

Nevertheless, on this week Trump supported a ceasefire proposal supported by Ukraine and European leaders to pause the war on the present positions.

"Leave it as is in its current state," he stated.

Moscow has frequently resisted against freezing the current line of contact.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Lavrov said on Tuesday, indicating that pausing conflict would merely represent a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the hostilities demanded attention, Lavrov stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of maximalist demands that include the recognition of complete Moscow control over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president stated conversations concerning the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "doing everything" to prevent dialogue.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "become engaged" was that of the supply of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

Putin's unscheduled call with Trump last Thursday occurred before reports that the US was planning to provide extended-range cruise missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit inside Russia.

Zelensky stated it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the missiles had turned out to be a "significant input" in international relations", he added.
