The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song

This latest animated series, the newest animated series by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

All in all, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the music selection.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, the creators has stated that the series will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
