The revered director, who transformed classical music on television, died at home with his family by his side.

A Career Dedicated to the Arts
Born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, in 1931, Burton rose to become one of the industry’s most admired broadcasters, bringing the joy of classical music to the wider audience.
His tenure as the BBC's head of music and arts in the sixties and seventies was marked by award-winning work, including the programme The Golden Ring.
1978 saw him introduce the Young Musician of the Year, a competition instrumental in identifying future stars including violinist Nicola Benedetti.

Broadcasting figures and institutions voiced their sadness, highlighting his profound influence on generations of cultural producers.

Burton was a regular collaborator of legends Yehudi Menuhin and Leonard Bernstein, authoring the latter's biography.

His family said he was “deeply loved” and that his driving purpose of sharing classical music was “so inspiring.”

His illustrious career included being a founding member of a major television company and editing the arts series Aquarius.
His awards included three from the British Academy and four Emmy Awards. He was awarded a knighthood in 2020 for his contributions to classical music and the arts.
In his 2021 autobiography, he voiced a desire for networks to be bold with new music programmes, lamenting a decline in audience for talent competitions.
