Far-Right Former Congressman José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile's Next Head of State.
In a decisive runoff election, far-right figure José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidential office in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Triumph
With over 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third presidency, having in the past been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Platform Built On Law and Order and Migration
Noted for his staunch Catholic views and regard for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was mostly focused on promises to combat growing violence and radically curb migration.
He consistently pointed to foreigners, notably the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the race, he gave an ultimatum for them to depart before the March 11 handover or face deportation.
His policy ideas included Trump-inspired measures such as constructing holding facilities, barriers, security fences, and strengthening the army presence on the northernmost frontier.
Part of a Continental Shift
Numerous analysts view Kast's victory as fitting into a larger rightward wave in the region, coming after recent political wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other pundits further frame it as a continuation of the predictable alternation of power between left and right-wing governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Lacking a Strong Majority
Despite his clear popular vote triumph, Kast will not command an clear majority in Congress, neither in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even when various conservative parties are combined together.
This political situation could complicate his policy goals, including a promise to cut public spending by billions within a year and a half—a measure for which he has not provided concrete steps.
"There are many questions about how a Kast administration will be that we don't know because he has not explained his methods for implement them," noted a political analyst.
The expert added, "On economic policy, it is very likely we will see austerity policies associated with the right. However the area with considerably less doubt is on security policy, because that has been his central theme throughout the campaign."
