New Year Revelers Advised to Bundle Up with Snow Predicted Across the UK
Meteorologists have indicated an icy start to the new year, with snowfall expected across much of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Plans Proceed Amid Alerts
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are expected to proceed, following last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid advisories for snow across northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be necessary," stated the national forecaster.
Fireworks Under Open but Chilly Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are forecast to be cold, so extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.
To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

- People are advised to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on public transport.
Readings Expected to Plummet Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Advisories Released
In addition, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this signified the weather was expected to lead to major effects across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
