One of the co-founders of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed that parent company Unilever blocked the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company alongside his partner, announced that he plans to independently develop this new flavor as part of an individual collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.

Longstanding Conflict Between Founders and Parent Company

The recent announcement deepens the continuing tension among the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.

The co-founders maintain how the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked their company from "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Flavor as a Symbol for Support

The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for naming options plus potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its colors, which match the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement and Recent Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.

The new dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company which was first established several years back for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts and Upcoming Plans

Mr. Cohen stated how he will create other frozen dessert varieties that address concerns that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly due to Unilever.

The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years of involvement, mentioning worries that its independence had been undermined following corporate moves to curb its social activism.

Previously, Mr. Cohen commented how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."

"My heart compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can achieve the social mission, the values which it was founded on while upholding for decades," he told media outlets.
